Why is Jamu Postnatal Massage so popular in Asia and is it necessary?

Postnatal massages are practised for centuries. Especially in Asia, many new mothers go through postnatal massage during their confinement period. Jamu Postnatal massage is one of the popular massages that are mostly done. Jamu originates from Indonesia and it is the “heart” of Malays. Jamu evolve around their lives, it comes in forms of drinks, beauty products, for cooking and also used in medication. So what exactly is Jamu? It is various combination of different herbs and plants targeted for different purposes. It is consider a “naturally healer “of everything. In the Malay community, postnatal massage is a must after delivery. They believed that this helped the new mother to regain back her health and beauty. Postnatal massage is a skill that is usually pass down by the grandmother to the mother. It focuses on long and firm strokes when massaging to rid get of wind and to help reduce water retention. A light and aromatic oil based massage oil such as lemongrass oil is used. It helps to improve blood circulation and relieve labour strain and aches. The tummy is one the main focus area as the massage aids to dispel blood clots in the womb and speed up the shrinkage of the uterus. Jamu helps to heal the body. The common ingredients use in Jamu is lime, lemongrass, betel leaves and turmeric. These combinations are believed to warm the body, helps to detoxify the wind and also to aid in slimming. External application of Jamu helps to tighten tummy muscles and also to expel wind. Consuming of Jamu pills are also common to restore the health internally. The last part of the postnatal massage end with a long cloth wrapping round the tummy to the hip bones. They believed that binding will prevent any wind from entering the body and also to reduce tummy size. Commonly in Indonesia, postnatal massage is done continuously for 40 days. In our present days, Jamu postnatal massage is still most sought for after delivery. The abundant health benefits and effectiveness the new mother gain is just like a butterfly that emerged into motherhood. Being through 2 pregnancies and experiencing the benefits of Jamu postnatal massage personally, I am in better shape running around with my two girls. |
